By, Amitpal Bains
Colleges are all about opportunities and what you make of them and that is exactly what Jonathon Castro, a student at Chemeketa, is trying to do.
Castro is trying to start a program called Phi Alpha Delta Pre-law Chapter.
Castro said, “I was inspired for several reasons; one, I want to go to law school, I want to gain knowledge and experience in regards to attending law school, and because I want to leave a foundation for future students with the same interests as me in regards to law.”
Phi Alpha Delta is a professional law fraternity advancing integrity, compassion and courage through service to the student, the school, the profession and the community. Their core values that they like to teach are Integrity, Compassion, Courage, Professionalism, Service, Diversity, and Innovation.
According to Rebecca Hillyer, the Director of Legal Resources at Chemeketa and the Club Advisor of the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-law Chapter, Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Chapter is the chapter created by Phi Alpha Delta to help pre-law students.
“It’s designed to help students who are interested in going to Law School get there”, Hillyer said. “It gives students an idea of what law school is going to be like. There are no pre requirements to join; you just have to be a student at Chemeketa with interest in law.”
There are also many advantages for joining Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Chapter as well.
According to Hillyer, you get to meet other students interested in law, possibly take field trips to meet members of the community in the legal field, students will be allowed to practice the LSAT exam, learn about law school admission process, college credit and much more.
One interesting fact about the program is that it’s actually been around for a while and many famous people were actually once part of the program. Bill Clinton, one of our former presidents, was once part of Phi Alpha Delta. Other famous members include Joe Biden, James E. Carter, Harry S. Truman and many more.
Castro said, “I think it’s cool that Bill Clinton, one of my favorite presidents, was a Phi Alpha Delta member.”
Castro is doing everything he can to start the chapter for everyone at Chemeketa, but one man can’t do it alone. In order to start the chapter, Castro needs to have 20 members committed on joining.
