Teddy K.

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Ted Kennedy’s death was announced this morning and it got me to thinking, did anyone really think he would be the Kennedy that had the greatest impact on American politics? Here’s a guy who watched his two brothers rise to political (and pop-cultural) stardom, only to subsequently reach their untimely and tragic ends.

Ted Kennedy witnessed major moments in American history first hand starting with his election in 1962, but the most impressive element of his political life is the scope of legislation he supported and opposed (successfully and not so successfully) during his time in office ranging from the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Immigration Act of 1965 to the 1980sf-ted-kennedy260 when he fought for equal rights for children with disabilities and the elderly and the Voting Rights Act, to his recent work on the Higher Education Opportunity Act, which provided more grant opportunities and financial assistance to students.

Ted Kennedy’s political exploits are universally impressive. But maybe even more notable is his (and his family’s) influence on American culture. As you no doubt have heard many people say, the Kennedy family was as close to American royalty as we will ever see. I think this is accurate. Not only that, I believe that we will never even come close to the mystery and allure that the Kennedy family held. The notion of mystery has long since disappeared and in its place we now have twittering politicians with facebook pages and flickr accounts. I would not call it alluring to know what my local legislators ate for breakfast this morning.

With Sen. Kennedy’s passing will no doubt come the blog trolls and critics who will bring up everything from Kennedy being a murderer, a drunk, or even worse …. a liberal. To them I would say this: American politics (whether you like it or not) is about compromise. We require multiple perspectives to come to a middle-ground decision. My hope is that even the most conservative of 24-hour news network pundits will pay Sen. Kennedy the respect he deserves for 46 years of service to his country.

terrell-owens-finds-home-in-buffaloMany of you out there know what it is like to have respect for your enemies. As much as I hate to admit it, I will miss T.O. playing for the Cowboys not because I like T.O., but because I loved to root against him. Sometimes the Cowboys win, sometimes the Eagles do (unless it’s the playoffs, then only the Eagles win), but I have to respect that man’s talent, even if I don’t like his verbage. After all, what good is a hero without a villain?

Patriotism at its Finest

I know … I write a lot about sports. Don’t complain. I am one of those guys who like the history, the pageantry, the numbers, the records. I like that my Philadelphia Phillies have lost more games than any other franchise in sports. I also like that they are World Series Champs (after 28 long years of Philadelphia sports teams being losers).

I also think that sports and politics have a lot in common. They are both games. They both have rules (and cheating cheaters that break them). There are teams and all-stars and rookies of the year. And both politics and sports are at their finest when they are played for the right reasons (such as pride … not money) and both sides can shake hands after the game and be civil to each other.

So it may shock you that the inspiration for this post is not the greatest sporting event of the year, the NCAA basketball tournament, but instead the most overlooked and ignored sporting event of the year, the World Baseball Classic.

Yes, that World Baseball Classic.

The one you are ignoring.

The one that you turn the channel from ESPN when you see a heated match up between the Netherlands and Trinidad.

I know. Steroids … HGH … Barry Bonds. Who watches baseball anymore? Well, I do. And this story, about a veteran getting the chance to hang out with the USA team a few days ago in Miami after they came from behind in the ninth inning to beat Puerto Rico, rocks. Check out my favorite quote from the story:

And so began the coolest 30 minutes of Felix Perez’s life. On an evening when he felt especially proud to be an American – when a group of his sporting heroes wearing his country’s name across their chests banded together to win a game they had no business winning – Perez found himself surrounded by them, doused with celebratory Miller Lites, with the American flag that was with him during the worst moment of his life passed around the room and signed by every player on the team.

Nevermind that Team USA (who got blown out of the tournament last time) isn’t playing for money. Nevermind that they are risking injury. Nevermind that they won a game they had no business winning. On this night, they did all that and more. They made one fan’s love of his country and of baseball totally pay off.

Even if he is a stinking Mets fan.

The First Fan

I have to give credit to our newly minted President for truly being a man of the people. Here he is talking trash with a fan at last Friday’s Wizards v. Bulls game in Washington DC.

Whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, this photo articulates an important point. In the end, we are all on the same team. Even if you live in a house that is evenly split between Duck and Beaver fans (go Beavs by the way), you still a house of Oregonians. Or if you and your best friend are still in a heated debate about whether Lebron or Kobe is the MVP of the NBA, you are still both basketball fans.

But most importantly, whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, for or against the stimulus, whether you think that McCain lost because of Sarah Palin or in spite of her, you are still an American, but more importantly, you are a human being.

So act like one.

Go to a basketball game with your friends and cheer for different teams, you could even heckle the refs!

Have a debate about healthcare and don’t be afraid to disagree with your friends/parents/teachers/pets/neighbors.

But don’t take it personal. After all, we’re all on the same team … right?
