Why did you choose Chemeketa?
I chose to come to Chemeketa because it just seemed like the right fit. I had spent time on campus already while completing my G.E.D. I already lived in Salem so it would be close. Plus I knew that at some point I would be heading to a four year school, so I wanted to get the college experience on a smaller scale first. One of main goals was to try new things while attending school. I didn’t want to just blend into the crowd and bolt as soon as my class was out. And that’s one of the cool things about starting smaller. It’s easier to make an impact.
What were some of your first impressions about Chemeketa? Have those impressions changed since you started?
My first impressions of Chemeketa were kind of mixed. I was a little nervous about coming back to school after four years. But I was also excited. It was cool to see other people just like me, making an effort to better themselves. And a lot of pretty girls…
What is your major? Why did you decide to major in that? What do you plan to do with your degree?
My major is public relations. That’s actually the reason I came to school. I had a bit of a breakdown in my life, and decided that I wanted something more. So I asked myself what are my talents. What came through the surest was my ability to talk to people and listen. So I decided that I would go into a field where talking is your bread and butter. After this year I’m planning on transferring to a school in Boston. After completion of school I will work in public relations, and someday I would love to have my own workshop being a motivational speaker.
Describe your family background? Are you the first in your family to attend college?
My family background could be described as blue collar. When I was born my family lived in a small town in Idaho without running water or electricity. We moved to Oregon when I was two so that my brother and I could have more opportunity. No one in my family has been to college.Describe the diversity on campus. The diversity on this campus is crazy! I love it. You have every race, age, and size of people here on campus. While I worked in disabilities services last year I had the chance to meet students from all over. But what’s really awesome is that no matter where we come from, everyone here shares one goal, we want to learn.Describe the climate on campus.
Do you fell safe at Chemeketa? Explain.
I would say the climate on campus is positive. But as far as safety, I did get my car busted into and my stereo stolen so make sure to lock your car.
Describe the classes you are taking this term? Are you taking any just for “fun?” If so, why? What is your favorite Chemeketa class thus far and why? Which class is the most challenging?
This term I’m taking Writing 123, Health and fitness for life, consumer chemistry, history of the United States, and racquet ball. For anybody who is looking for a new and exciting thing in their life, racquet ball is it. Not only is it a great workout, but you come out alert and focused. It’s intense but fun at the same time, it will definitely get your blood flowing.
Which class is the most challenging?
I would have to say my speech classes or journalism. It was cool writing for the paper, just to see another aspect of Chemeketa. Plus Bill Florence is the man, even though he gave me a B.
What is your favorite food to eat at the Food Court?
The cheddar melt wraps are are good.
In which student activities are you involved or plan to become involved? Why is it important to be involved on campus?
I try to be involved in campus activities. Previously I have done volunteer work and worked with the TRiO club for events for Chemeketa. Not sure about this year though, I have to make sure my grades are on point for my transfer!
Where is your favorite place to go and relax on campus?
Relax?
Have you ever taken an online/hybrid course or do you plan to? If you have, tell your experience. If not, why would you want to?
I haven’t taken any online courses yet, not sure I trust my time management skills that much.
Describe your favorite or unique instructor(s).
I have had a lot of really cool instructors. Bill Florence from The Courier, Josie Wood for speech, and David Hardesty from the GED program. But my all time favorite, one of the coolest guys is Sam Pierce. If you are gonna take any psychology, take this guy. Trust me.
What are the top 5 ways to get on your instructor’s good side?
Only one tip…go to class!
So that’s a little about me, If you guys have any questions or comments you can hit me up at my email msischo@cp.chemeketa.edu. And if you see me on campus say what’s up, I’m the tall guy with the million dollar smile…
