Huge congratulations to Denisse Maciel, of Salem. She was recently selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Congress in June.
Maciel was one of two students in the state and about 100 throughout the country selected to participate. She is a senior at North Salem High School and a participant in the Chemeketa Community College Upward Bound Program. During the conference, she will meet Oregon senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith and attend leadership workshops through the week. She will travel to Washington D.C. June 7-12 with Chemeketa counselor Chris Solario.
“Denisse has made an incredible commitment to her education and her community,” said Solario. “Few deserve this opportunity as much as her.”
Maciel often provides translation services at North Salem High School and has been an active member of the Upward Bound Leadership Council.
Chemeketa’s Upward Bound program provides opportunities for first-generation, low-income high school students to explore career options and higher education choices. Through tutoring, testing and other services Upward Bound aims to teach the skills necessary for success in higher education.
Maciel was also awarded a Brody Scholarship to Western Oregon University. The scholarship is awarded to students from diverse backgrounds, especially those who are traditionally under-represented in higher education. Awards are competitive and consider ethnic background, first-generation status, bilingual ability (Spanish/English preferred), financial need, educational background, community service, leadership and activities as well as overall qualify of application. This scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board.

Chemeketa’s transfer engineering program held its annual bridge competition earlier today. Students worked on the weight-bearing structures for much of the term before subjecting them to the weight test.
The structures had a to have a span of 14 inches, a maximum height of 7 inches and max weight of 2.5 oz.
Kyle Bonnet, Jonathan Boyd and James Lofton won the competition. Their 2.16 oz. bridge held a whopping 942 pounds, or 6,978 times it’s own weight. They’re in the last picture of the photo gallery here.
