Wanna rock the vote?

Chemeketa will be holding an all-day, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., voter registration drive Friday, Oct. 10, in the lobby of Bldg. 2.

The drive is being held in conjunction with the second annual Mix ‘N’ Mash  event in Salem. The Mix ‘N’ Mash featuring 50 bands at more than 20 venues throughout town. For more information on Mix ‘N’ Mash, and a line-up of events, check out the Statesman Journal article here.

Chemeketa’s Got Talent: Have you signed up?

Our judges are gearing up for the fall 2008 round of Chemeketa’s Got Talent on the Salem campus, but contestants can sign up now.

Entry forms are available at the office of Student Retention & College Life, Bldg. 2 Rm. 176. Tryouts are slated for Wednesday, Nov. 5. Regular competition rounds will be held Nov. 12, 19 and 26.

Pizza and Politics: Free Trade, Human Rights and Immigration Forum

Bishop Medardo E. Gómez-Soto and Carrie Tracy of the Northwest Federation of Community Organizers will speak on Free Trade, Human Rights and Immigration Forum Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Multicultural Center, 1:30 – 3 p.m.

Free pizza and drinks are supplied.

Bishop Medardo E. Gomez-Soto, a bishop of the Resurrection Lutheran Church of the Salvadoran Synod, was recently honored for his courageous support of peace and human rights in El Salvador. Bishop Gomez-Soto, church leaders, and members suffered harassment, threats, capture, and torture for their stand in support of peace and reconciliation, and their commitment to the most vulnerable people. In New York, he served as the President of the International Association against Torture. He was the 1990 recipient of the Rothko Chapel’s Oscar Romero Award, which is presented to persons or organizations who distinguish themselves by their courage and integrity in defense of human rights.

Carrie Tracy is an attorney and is the director of the Immigration Project for the Northwest Federation of Community Organizations. NWFCO provides training, technical assistance, and policy support for grassroots organizations in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana. The grassroots activists who make up NWFCO’s membership represent low-income communities, immigrants, urban Native Americans, and people with disabilities.

The clown of modern fiction

Praised by counterculture icons Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club)and Katherine Dunn (Geek Love), Monica Drake’s “Clown Girl” landed with both oversized shoes planted firmly on the ground.

On Nov. 8, Drake will provide insight into the act of writing and her own process in a workshop, titled “Stolen Truth: Bringing Your Life into Fiction,” at Chemeketa Community College. All you’ll need is your memories and a pen, no prior writing experience required. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cost is $125 and includes lunch. Participants in the workshop will also be encouraged to submit a short fiction piece for inclusion in Chemeketa’s online literary journal, “Building 45.”

Drake will be hosting two readings on Friday, Nov. 7. The first is slated for 11:30 to 12:30 in the Chemeketa Multicultural Center, Building 2 on the Salem campus. The second is scheduled at the Blue Pepper in downtown Salem at 7:30 p.m.

Eye to the telescope

hubble.jpgChemeketa’s planetarium kicks off it’s fall season, Hubble Visions, tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The planetarium will be celebrating the many accomplishments and breakthroughs made as results of placing the Hubble Telescope in orbit in 1990.

All shows include a brief introduction that explores the night time sky over Salem during this season of the year.

Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 children and Chemeketa students and are sold at the door beginning at 7:15 p.m. The Planetarium is located in Building 2, Room 171. Show repeats every Friday through Nov. 21.

Still Life? Not hardly.

johnvandrealwomaninbluewithpearl2.jpgThe Chemeketa Art Gallery’s new exhibit, “The Exquisite Still Life” opens Monday, Oct. 6.

Featuring the work of Lisa Caballero, Dan P. Carr, Bobbie Jansen and John Van Dreal, the last thing any of the paintings will make you feel is “still.”

A reception will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8, from noon to 2 p.m. The art gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit the Chemeketa art program site at art.chemeketa.edu.

Audition for Brighton Beach Memoirs

Chemeketa Community College will be hosting open auditions for its production Brighton Beach Memoirs at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1. Call backs are slated for 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2.

Interested players should report to the Chemeketa Auditorium, Building 6 on the Salem campus, 4000 Lancaster Drive N.E.Auditions will focus on cold readings and theatre games, but prepared monologues are welcome.

Brighton Beach Memoirs, by Neil Simon, is a family coming-of-age comedy about Eugene Jerome, a 15 year old boy who is just coming to terms with girls, his family, and life in general.

The play takes place in Brooklyn in 1937, and concerns a Jewish family trying to make ends meet in the shadow of the Great Depression under the looming threat of World War II.For additional information, contact Gabrielle Brewer-Wallin at 503-365-4727.

Another year, another first day of classes. Welcome back to all of our returning students and faculty, and, to all our new students, we’re happy to have you along for the next chapter in Chemeketa’s journey.If you’re reading this, you’ve made your way to the Chemeketa Community College news blog, its purpose is two-fold. Primarily, it serves as a way for us to let everyone know about upcoming events, but its secondary objective is to lift up the lives and work of our students.
