Montez Bailey

On May 29, 2009, hearts in Salem were broken over the senseless death of Montez Bailey, a young man who was shot and fatally wounded while sitting on a park bench with two friends. His friends, 21-year old Skylar Bailey and 20-year old Cameron Carolino, were also shot, but they survived. Eduardo Angulo, longtime advocate for kids in the Salem area said, “This is one of the most senseless crimes that we have ever had to witness in our lifetime.”

In memory of Montez’s life and legacy, a Memorial Scholarship has been established in his name. For this scholarship to be activated and distributed to students, it must contain more than $5000. Unfortunately, the Montez Bailey Memorial Scholarship has a current balance of less than $1000.

In an attempt to raise money for the Montez Bailey Memorial Scholarship, One Body (Chemeketa’s Intercultural Community Service Club) and the Office of Student Retention and College Life will be hosting a semi-formal fundraising dinner. Along with the entrée, side, and dessert, there will be music, speeches, poetry readings, and much more from various students and members of the community. By attending this dinner and supporting this scholarship, you will help keep Montez’s dream alive by allowing other students to pursue their dreams towards success.
