Chemeketa Small Business Development Center best in the Northwest

Chemeketa SBDC wins regional awardsChemeketa Community College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has been recognized with multiple awards for excellence by the federal agency that provides support to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

The Portland District office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) presented the Chemeketa SBDC with the SBDC of Excellence award for the 21 SBDCs in Oregon and southwest Washington during a May 20 luncheon in Portland. Governor John Kitzhaber and SBA Regional Adminsitrator Calvin Goings participated in the awards presentation.

As a bonus, the SBDC was also recognized as the top SBDC across the SBA’s entire region during the luncheon. The district includes all of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska.

“I’m so pleased to accept the recognition for the work that my staff does every day with business owners in our area,” said Marcia Bagnall, the director of Chemeketa’s SBDC. “And I’m so fortunate to work at Chemeketa Community College, where our college leadership has made such a strong investment to support the business community.”

Located at the Chemeketa Center for Business and Industry in downtown Salem, the SBDC offers numerous programs and services to help small businesses. These include management training, a resource center with computers, advising and a lending library, international trade assistance, a peer advisory program, the MERIT Microenterprise Program which helps people with ideas for businesses turn them into reality and the EDGE Business Accelerator, which provides startup businesses with office space, facilities and advising.


Chemeketa Center for Business & Industry receives EarthWISE Certification

CCBI awarded Earth Wise certificationChemeketa’s Center for Business and Industry (CCBI) in downtown Salem has been awarded Marion County’s EarthWISE Certification for operating in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The EarthWISE Certification recognizes businesses in Marion County that have made a commitment to environmentally-friendly practices in their operation. CCBI is the second Chemeketa location to receive the certification, joining the main Salem campus.

The CCBI facility is a LEED Silver certified building and generates renewable energy onsite through a 18.48 kW solar array. Environmental practices include a comprehensive recycling program, use of green-certified cleaning products, bike parking access for employees and visitors, landscaping with 50% of the plants and trees native to Oregon, and successful energy and water conservation efforts.
