Scholarships for Oregon Latinos alumni honored

By Chemeketa Public Affairs

A reception honoring former recipients of Scholarships for Oregon Latinos (SOL) was held at the Chemeketa Center for Business & Industry the evening of March 1. Participants shared stories and the audience was updated on the need to replenish the scholarship fund.

“Our SOL alumni described how they overcame their struggles because of support they received from the scholarship and mentoring,” said Chemeketa Foundation Director Nancy Duncan. “It was incredibly inspiring,” she added.

SOL was funded in 1995 when community members The Hon. Joseph V. Ochoa, George Puentes Sr., Lydia Muñiz, Michael Muñiz, Ricardo Baez, and Daniel P. Santos pooled resources to honor the memory of George Puentes Jr.

The scholarship involves a mentoring component and requires community service which many of the former students spoke about having changed their lives. The scholarship is for full-time students transferring to a university to obtain a Bachelor’s degree.

SOL co-founder Lydia Muñiz made a $5,000 matching pledge at the reception. She will match any donation up to $5,000 through March. Email or call the Chemeketa Foundation at 503.365.4747 for more information.
