Path to scholarships workshop

By Chemeketa Public Affairs

Chemeketa hosted 60 Salem-Keizer area high school students on Thursday, September 21 at an event titled, “Pathways to Scholarships.” The workshop focused on how to successfully compete for college scholarships.

Gerardo Ochoa, assistant dean for diversity and community partnerships at Linfield College presented the information.

“I am teaching them to write deeply,” Ochoa said. “I want them to develop a good personal narrative so they can tell a compelling story that will attract the interest of scholarship award committees.”

Ochoa urges his audience to not be bitter about the obstacles they face, but rather use challenges to make them better persons.

Paola from West Salem understands Ochoa’s advice, “When I think about what I’ve been through, I can see how those hard things have made me better, and I’m able to help my friends too.”

The event was co-sponsored by Chemeketa, Providence Health System and Univision TV.
